FILM EXHIBITION: Roman Polanski

Carnage
Monday 9th July
7:00pm
carnageTwo pairs of parents hold a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a fight, though as their time together progresses, increasingly childish behavior throws the evening into chaos.

Roman Polanski (b. Paris, 1933) has, over the course of a half century, become recognised as one of the great modern masters of the cinema. Many of his films are infused with a mysterious, difficult-to-define sense of dread, which is understandable given much of his early life experience.

His view of the world as something menacing is present from his debut feature, Knife in the Water (1962), through his award-winning The Ghost Writer (2010). And yet the depth of feeling in his Oscar-winning Holocaust film The Pianist speaks for itself. Like Alfred Hitchcock, who is in some sense Polanski’s stylistic mentor, the threat of chaos is always overlaid with wryly absurdist, dark humor-and frequently a triumphant humanism.

This screening is the last one of the series.

CineClub for Kids
 $3/child aged 3+

The films in this series are selected for their quality and originality. In this creative environment of the National Gallery, short films, innovative fictions, animation classics are screened. Parents who wish to attend the screenings are also welcome! Please note that children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

 Kirikou
Tuesday 10th July
3:00pm
Kirikou

This animated film exquisitely recounts the tale of tiny Kirikou – a clever, courageous little boy born in an African village in which Karaba the Sorceress has placed a terrible curse. Kirikou depicts a precocious newborn infant who battles ignorance, and so-called evil, with endearing perseverance. This film speaks to the child within us all who yearns to express and defend the best in others and ourselves. Kirikou’s stunning visuals are accented by a traditional music soundtrack by African music giant Youssou N’ Dour.

Language: French, subtitles: English

Parental Guidance: the film contains several instances of non-sexual female and male nudity to a lesser extent, as would be the norm in pre-colonial Africa. However, this was controversial enough to delay the film’s US release until 2002.

This film has won 8 awards, including The Best Animation Film and The Best European Feature Film.

The Gallery offers work experience positions to over 15 local high school students each year, and recently those from the Passport2Success programme. Students gain valuable learning experiences in an arts organisation. Work experience placements typically last one to two weeks depending on each school. This programme is generously supported by State Street.

Voluntary Work

If the above programmes don’t quite fit with your needs, for example due to timings, we’d still love to hear from you. We couldn’t manage without the help of our keen and dedicated volunteers and we’re always looking for new people to help out. If you’d like to sign up please visit our volunteer page for more information.

In addition to the formalised programmes detailed above, we offer short term, ad-hoc opportunities (one or two days) during the summer months for younger children. These opportunities provide youngsters with some valuable work experience and also give them an insight into the world of work.

For further information about these short term opportunities please contact Julia on administration@nationalgallery.org.ky

Financial Assistance

In accordance with our mission to educate and serve the entire community, the National Gallery welcomes people of all ages and abilities to learn about the many aspects of contemporary art through our education programmes.
